Transportation & Smart Growth

Bus, bike, walk, roll, charge.

Missoulians continue to play a crucial role in making our community climate smart. Together we can create a low-carbon transportation future that focuses development 'inward' and emphasizes an efficient multi-modal transportation network, transit-oriented development and pedestrian scale design. Let's work together and accelerate efforts to travel sustainably (bus, bike, walk, roll, charge), advocate for proper investment into sustainable transportation infrastructure, and support groups working to make our city healthier, more equitable, and easier to get around.

City and community transportation planning:

  • Missoula Long Range Transportation Plan - our 30 year plan.
    • Missoula Connect, completed in June 2021 is an amazing document of all things transportation in our community. Read the whole thing HERE.
  • Higgins Avenue - Brooks to Broadway - a 2022 and ongoing planning effort

bus. Mountain Line and UDASH work together to provide free public transit to our community. They're also electrifying their fleets to keep our air clean! Learn more on our e-bus page.

bike. Biking is a fun and active way to get around town. Missoula has 62 miles of bike lanes, trails, and cycle tracks to take advantage of. Get out there! Want to go further, faster? Try an electric bike.

walk. Missoula is increasingly emphasizing Smart Growth principles in development projects that will make our city an even better place you'll want to walk around. See our Smart Growth page for ways to get involved.

roll. Mountain line is currently implementing a bus stop master plan that will increase ADA accessibility, improve safety, and maximize efficiency. Participating in public comment periods for upcoming development plans is a great way to ensure our city is more accessible for everyone. See our Smart Growth page to get involved.

charge. Still need to drive? Go electric! A number of car dealers in town are selling electric vehicles that can reduce your carbon emissions from driving by more than half. Learn more on our EV page.
Community Emissions by Sector:
2019 data
Picture
Did you know transportation is one of the largest portion of Missoula's greenhouse gas emissions, making up 35% of our overall carbon footprint? On Road Gasoline (think cars & trucks) makes up ~72% of our total transportation emissions - it's a top priority!
(Note - this data is from 2019 via an updated emissions inventory from early 2022)
