Smart Growth - Active Transportation

Smart Growth – Active Transportation is our project to enhance the smart growth, land use planning, and active transportation strategies as described in Missoula’s Community Climate Action Plan. Our goal is to increase our community’s ability to “focus inward”, increase our downtown vitality, and enhance active transportation options for Missoula residents, businesses, and visitors. Our smart growth and transportation efforts are designed to help reduce our community’s greenhouse gas emissions. This project also reflects the value Missoulians place on efforts to create a healthy community in which people thrive even in the midst of climate change stress, by focusing on health, preparedness, and personal and community resilience.

We launched this program with the support of New Belgium Brewing Company and other community partners - thank you all!
So far we have:
  • measured the transportation emissions for the Missoula community via our Greenhouse Gas inventory
  • participated in 2017 Design Excellence workshops.
  • hosted a couple commuter "Breakfast Blitz" downtown during Walk and Roll week
  • hosted 3 downtown "parklets"
  • been a big hit at Sunday Streets two years running
  • designed and installed new downtown bike racks
  • encouraged getting out of our cars via Walk & Roll Week
  • participated in the spring "commuter challenge"
  • won second place in September's Walk and Roll week Commuter Race
  • hosted conversations about the nexus of active transportation and climate change
  • participated - a lot - in the Our Missoula Growth Plan update
  • participated in the Long Range Transportation Plan effort as part of the community advisory committee
